Linda Sonner, Volunteer Coordinator for the Batavia Community Garden, spoke about their wonderful initiative. The garden, located at Main and Water, raises food for the Batavia Food Pantry and local soup kitchens. Using only volunteers, they grow over 30 different kinds of vegetables using ecologically sound garden principles, educating the public on self-sufficiency, nourishment, and practical sustainability. Some of the volunteers are the Boy Scouts, gardening groups, BHS students, Key Club and many more. All ages are welcome (8 and younger, bring adult), and there are even three large raised beds for handicap accessibility. Linda encouraged the club to come out for the opportunity to connect with nature, to serve others less fortunate, and help build on Batavia’s great sense of community. It is also a great place for children to connect with the food they eat, so if you’re willing to get dirty, come out and help; you won’t be a pest!
